At a time when the environnement is everywhere losing its distinctive features, this journey through the Metauro valley is an alternative itinerary to the great "sanctuaries" created by mass tourism. The people of The Metauro have in fact been among the last to leave their mountain dwellings and come down to the valley and still today it is possible to see the last traces of those settlements embraced on all sides by nature, often uninhabited but rich in human warmth and presence and bordered by hedges, roads and shrines. But the treasures of the territory do not stop at the historical and architectural delights: of notable interest are the natural outcrops of the Gola del Furlo, la Gola Cerbara, an area of great geological and naluralistic importance and the Marche side of Massa Trabaria. And from Urbino the journey winds along In search of new scenary: on a curve of the river, Fermignano reveals its roman origins in the beautiful bridge. Urbania, in the past known as Casteldurante, which gained fame for its ceramic production, can be reached by the old Ducal road that Francesco Maria II in the 16th century took three hours to cover in his litter. Today in just a few minutes one can have a look at Barco, once the duke's residence and passing below Peglio, a small medieval settlement, reach Sant'Angelo In Vado, once capital of Ihe Massa Trabaria territory, which is today the centre of the precious white truffle and a rich historical and cultural town. Further along the upper river valley, the ancient village of Mercatello sul Metauro stands out not far from the settlement of Borgo Pace near the river source. Further down from the ducal town,Montecalvo in Foglia rests on the top of a gentle hill. Finally, there is Petriano which is to be found on a hill between the two rivers and which is famous for its thermal springs.
